I hope that these strategies help you at home! Please don’t hesitate to ask for any materials that you may need- I have lots that I am willing to send home! As always, thank you for all of your support. Your child wouldn't be making such great progress without your help! --Ms. Knapp
1. Quick Flashcard Review: If you have 3 minutes, simply present your child with their sight words. If your child gets the word right, let them keep it! If they get the word wrong, keep it in your list so you can review it again. Go through the words until your child has all of his/her words! You can also set a timer to see how long it takes your child to get all of their words correct!
2. Salty Words: Buy a container of salt ($.88), add 3-4 drops of food coloring, shake in a zip lock! Empty onto a cookie sheet/cake pan, and ask your child to write the sight words in the salt. You could also hide the words in salt/rice/etc, and your child could dig to find them!
3. Squeaky Clean Words: During bath time, put shaving cream on your shower wall. Ask your child to write his/her sight words in the shaving cream.
4. Sorry! Write your child’s words on cards or popsicle sticks, and include some cards that say “Sorry”. Take turns choosing words out of a pile/bowl. If your child gets the word right, he/she may keep it. If someone gets “sorry” they must return all of their words to the pile!
5. Post-it Words: Write the words on post-its and make a code to get into the refrigerator, or hang them on the bathroom mirror, so your child can review the words as they brush their teeth, get ready for school, etc.
6. BINGO: Create a bingo chart with your child’s sight words.
7. Memory/Concentration: Write each word on 2 cards and lay face down on a table. You and your child can take turns finding matches!
8. Candy Land/Board Games: We often play board games to review sight words! Each time your child takes a turn, ask them to identify the sight word!
9. Roll-A-Word: Use dice. Give each number a word (ex. 1: for, 2:am 3:them...). When your child rolls the die, ask them to identify the word.
10. Hide & Seek Words: Hide the words around the house and ask your child to find & identify them!
11. Whack a Word: Write your sight words on flies (Yes, I have a fly template that I could send home!), and ask your child to whack-a-word with a fly swatter (clean fly swatters are probably best!)
